I thought Rep. DeLauro was generally a champion of the family farm and locally based food systems. Why has she bought into the ridiculous flat fee structure. I agree with her that failing to fund strengthened food safety oversight might doom it to failure. But why not a sensible graduated structure? If all facilities larger than, say, $100,000 gross, were simply assessed 0.05% of gross, then the million dollar moderate size business would pay the $500, and the billion dollar conglomerate would help out with their fare share of $500,000.
It seems that we need to talk with Rep. DeLauro about this.

Why are the regulations always a new burden on the grower? Why isn't there more attention paid to the responsibility of the consumer?

I spent 30+years as a chef, served more than 2,000,000 meals, and no one ever got sick. Why? Simple, safe food handling and WASHING! People are blaming the grower, when they are eating unwashed, raw produce. They need to be educated!
